I have always been inspired by the passage of the seasons, the associated light and weather conditions, and their effect on the landscape.
My work is derived for the most part from trips out to nearby places, to observe what’s before me, looking for something that takes hold of my imagination, an evocation of atmosphere or mood from which to generate a painting. It may be fleeting but the aim is to produce from it something lasting which captures that initial idea. Sometimes I don’t need to travel far – just looking out of my window at home can inspire a start on something. I make small pieces in situ or attempt to complete a painting in “one hit.” Painting outdoors or “en plein air” has become a valued part of my working process which I really enjoy. Sometimes, those small pieces will inspire larger paintings or a series of further interpretations of the same subject. For me, painting and drawing is an exciting and challenging process and I continue to develop ideas and experiment.
