Painting in Mull (Iona behind)
Michelle was born in Pembrokeshire and has practised as an artist for over 25 years. She now lives in Shropshire.
Working primarily in oils and occasionally watercolour, she draws upon her surroundings as an infinite well of inspiration. Her often ‘quiet’ paintings reflect a sensitive and personal vision of the language of those surroundings, it’s subtleties, vagaries and quirks captured in a painterly, yet structured way.
“Small paintings or drawings done from the subject are often a starting point for paintings which will evolve over time, sometimes being reworked for months or even years. Other pieces may resolve themselves quickly and with these, I try to retain the energy of the initial marks. The aim is to create a sense of place and atmosphere and not a literal depiction of the subject. The process often involves scraping back and overpainting until I ‘m satisfied that a conclusion seems to have been reached ”
